4 Tips To Make Your Replacement Windshield Last

Many companies offer mobile windshield repair and replacement so you don't have to be without your vehicle while new glass gets installed following a collision or damage. While the service is convenient, you'll want to protect your investment after installation so it lasts as long as possible.

Follow Proper Post-Replacement Care Instructions

One of the most important things you can do to make your replacement windshield last is to wait before driving your vehicle. Your auto glass installer will advise you on how long you should wait, but most mobile windshield technicians advise customers to wait at least an hour after installation before driving.

Allowing your car time to sit will help the glass bond with the vehicle frame properly and allows the adhesive time to dry thoroughly.

Leave the retention tape on the glass for at least 24 to 48 hours. The tape helps keep dirt, sand, and other debris away from the edge where the glass meets the frame to avoid compromising the seal.

Drive carefully to avoid potholes and other bumps on your first drive after a windshield replacement. Crack your windows to help equalize the air pressure for the first day or two after replacement. Be gentle with your doors, particularly in the first days following auto glass replacement. Slamming your car doors can prevent the seal from setting properly or even crack the glass.

Watch Where You Park

Park your vehicle in a covered, safe location whenever possible to help protect your new windshield. Carports and garages help protect the glass from hail and falling branches and other objects.

The UV rays from the sun can stress the glass of your windshield over time, so try to avoid parking in direct sunlight whenever possible to avoid breaks and cracks in the glass.

Clean Like a Pro

It's important to clean the glass of your windshield — both inside and out — regularly. Use an ammonia-free cleaner and a soft cloth or sponge to avoid damaging window tint and prevent scratches and streaks. Avoid pressure washers and high-pressure car washes that could damage the glass or dislodge it from the gasket.

Don't neglect cleaning around your windshield either. The rubber gasket around the glass that keeps your windshield in place can crack or pull away if dirt or other debris builds up around the seal, so make sure to clean around the entire perimeter of your windshield when you wipe it down.

Replace Your Wiper Blades

Replace your windshield wiper blades at least every six months to keep your replacement windshield looking and functioning great for years to come. Wiper blades with worn-out rubber can scratch the glass, which wears it down and makes it more susceptible to chips and cracks.
