Lately, you may have started to suspect that there is something wrong with your car's exhaust system. You may have noticed an overly strong gas odor even while the car windows are up or you may have heard popping coming from the rear of the vehicle.

Along with the symptoms that you may be noticing at present, your car may also be experiencing other issues as well. Below are a couple of potential problems that your car can have which are usually attributed to an exhaust system that needs repairing. 

1.  Engine's Fuel Delivery System Will Be Greatly Affected

One issue that often arises when your car's exhaust system is failing is that the engine's fuel delivery will be greatly affected. The first place you may notice this effect is the gas pump, which you will have to visit more often because of decreasing gas mileage. This is because the engine must work harder to create enough compressive force to push the exhaust through the system and out of the tailpipe. 

The second is when you are either sitting at a stoplight or traveling at lower speeds. Because the smooth flow of gas combusting and expelling exhaust has been interrupted, your car's engine may not receive enough fuel, causing it to sputter.

2.  Motor's Overall Performance Will Decrease Significantly

Another problem you may notice when the exhaust system is no longer working properly on your car is a significant decrease in the motor's overall performance. You may find that the car struggles to pick up speed or climb up an incline.

When the exhaust is not flowing freely out and away from the engine, it creates too much pressure within the motor. Because of this, the motor must work harder to go at faster speeds and up hills, which will make its performance less noticeable than it was before you started having issues.

If you start to notice a decrease in your car's gas mileage and/or engine performance or even find that it stalls out while you are sitting still or driving slowly, there is most likely an issue with the exhaust system. If the engine is unable to push the exhaust fumes efficiently through the system, you may start seeing the above issues worsen over time.
