Windshield Wipers and Your Windshield: What You Need to Know

Windshield wipers help to remove water from your windshield when it is raining. They also play a role in cleaning your windshield with wiper fluid when you are driving. Unfortunately, though, many people do not replace their wipers as often as they should. There are many reasons why this is a negative thing, and not every reason has to do with your ability to see when it is raining. Here is some information that you will want to know about windshield wipers and your windshield.

Signs You Need Wiper Replacement

It is recommended that you replace your windshield wipers on a yearly basis. Most people do so in the fall before winter weather hits. In addition to replacing them annually, yours may need to be replaced more frequently, depending on how often they are used. If the blades are not removing moisture from your windshield and smearing the water around, it is time to replace the wiper blades. Additionally, if you notice the rubber is lifting or splitting from the metal or plastic arm, it is time to replace your windshield wipers.

What Happens if the Blades Don't Get Replaced

There are many reasons why you want to have your windshield wipers replaced frequently. First, the wipers remove water from your windshield so you can see. If your blades are worn, water may smudge or smear, making it harder for you to see. Secondly, if your blades are wearing down, it leaves the plastic or metal arm rubbing against your windshield. This can cause scratches to develop on your windshield.

Signs Your Blades Have Scratched Your Windshield

When there are scratches on your windshield, it can affect your visibility while driving. You may be unable to see clearly, light may reflect in the wrong direction or it can cause things to look blurry. If you notice what appear to be scratches on your windshield, rub your hand on the windshield. If it has been scratched by your windshield wipers, you will be able to feel the scratches.

If your windshield wipers have damaged your windshield glass, you will want to bring your car to an auto glass repair shop. If the scratches are simply on the surface of the glass, a professional may be able to buff the scratches out and salvage your auto glass. Unfortunately, if the scratches are deep or you have had your glass buffed multiple times, the windshield may need to be replaced. Replacing your windshield wipers frequently can help to prevent them from damaging your windshield.
